Windows NT and its successor Windows 2000 and XP were the successors to Windows 3.1 and 95, respectively. Windows NT was originally released in 1993 as a 32-bit Microsoft operating system intended to compete with other vendors of the time such as Unix, Sun Microsystems, and Silicon Graphics. It has been retired since 2009 in favor of newer versions such as Windows 10 or Windows XP. Nowadays it's hard to find an older version except for professional use or if you find it on sale online. Windows 2000 is an integrated operating system for 32-bit personal computers. It was made available by Microsoft in April 1992. It is the successor of Windows NT 3.1 and comes with many new features, such as Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), Sockets, Device Manager, and User Profile Services (UPS). Windows 98 was released on May 16, 1997. It was aimed at consumers more than previous versions of Windows, had more user-friendly interface, easier upgradeability and better support for plug-and-play devices than Windows NT 4.0 did. It also supported the new PowerPC processor architecture introduced in the PowerPC 604e/604ev processors of Apple Inc. Windows 98 was officially supported by Microsoft until April 8, 2000. Windows ME (Millennium Edition), was released to the public in July 1999 and ceased mainstream support on January 13, 2009. The last version released for Windows 2000 (although it has been used in OEM installations long after the cessation of mainstream support) was version 9.1, released in October 2001. It was also released to OEM customers on a stand-alone basis until December 2003, when Microsoft ended all production and support of Windows ME. Some companies continued to manufacture their BIOSes for this platform beyond this date, making it possible for some older hardware to still run Windows ME after its cessation of mainstream support. The only version of Windows 98 to have any mainstream support was Service Pack 2. It was distributed with Internet Explorer 5.5, Outlook Express 4.72, Windows Media Player 6.4, and the Security Update for Windows 98 (SB98). Windows ME is now considered obsolete, as current versions have essential security updates included. Windows NT 10 was released in August 2016 to coincide with Microsoft's release of its successor Windows 10 operating system. It runs on the x86-64 architecture and has some features of its predecessor, Windows 10. The operating system has two editions: Home and Professional. It is available as a download, or received by users through Windows Update, which will install it on any compatible PC. It only takes about 20 minutes to install on a PC that is connected to internet. Windows Vista was released on January 30, 2007. It had two editions: Starter Edition and Business Edition (see below). The Starter Edition had limited features for consumers, while the Business edition provided full features for businesses. cfa1e77820
